Let me introduce ourselves. We are the Diamond Z Ranch from Leola, SD. The “we” consists of myself, Arlene, and my two daughters Dusti and Hayley. I have been raising American Quarter Horses since 1972. The Ranch is named after my dad (Gilbert Zumbaum) who died in 1980 in a farm accident. My dad got me started in horses when I was four years old by buying me a sorrel Shetland Pony. While growing up on the prairies of South Dakota I was known in my community for my love of horses. My daughters started riding when they could sit on a horse. They have shown at numerous open shows in the area and won countless awards. Both my daughters have also shown AQHA and FQHA. They also love horses.
Now a little bit about our breeding program. We breed for disposition, conformation and color. In that order. Our broodmares are a variety of bloodlines, but our main focus is on Foundation Quarter Horses. We cross our mares on stallions that have more modern breeding. I like more of the performance bloodlines like reining, cutting, working cowhorses, etc. Our foals are born out in the pastures and left alone until we wean in the fall. After they are weaned we halter break them, feed them for the winter and then turn them out to pasture for their yearling year. In the fall of their yearling year we bring them back in and work with them again. We usually do not sell our foals at auction before they are coming two years old. Each year we pick a few two year olds to ride and show ourselves. We have sold our horses at Lolli Brothers Sales in Macon, MO for the past 15 years. Hopefully with this website we can now sell direct to you the customer.
